Dolmens
Drenthe’s pride, the famous prehistoric dolmens are scattered throughout the province.
The stones of these structures are so large that it was once thought that only giants (huyns) could have made the dolmens. The giant stones were brought to our country by glaciers during the Ice Age and are originally from southern Sweden and Finland. The dolmens are more than 5,000 years old and were probably used as tombs.
It is amazing to realize that people moved these giant stones without machines. This must have taken gigantic effort at the time. Anthropologists therefore believe that the hunebed builders had a culture in which ancestors were highly revered.
In the province of Drenthe there are 52 hunebeds scattered throughout the province(map with distribution area) The largest hunebed is in Borger where the hunebed center is also located. For more information visit www.hunebedcentrum.nl
